Preparing for a Photoshoot
Photographs are a new way to communicate. For some, it’s to communicate their stories to the world, for others, it’s to share stories with posterity. The latter, is precisely what I do for a living. Your kids aren’t going to be this tiny for too long and you may as well make the most of these memories that they can cherish when they grow up. Remember mums, some of the best pictures we have today are the ones with our parents in them.So make sure, you are part of your li'l one's pictures, to help you visually tell stories of your unconditional love for them.
THE FIRST STEP
You could either capture those priceless moments yourself, or you can hire a professional photographer. This is kind-of obvious, but investing in a good photographer also means you get their creative direction, expertise, and professional photo editing. There are so many photographers out there today but you want to pick one by looking at their work extensively, and figuring out whose approach and style you like best. This is an important step to ensure both parties are happy with the end result.Once you’ve sorted a photographer and schedule, let your family members know in advance to build up the excitement.
SET THE MOOD
Get an idea of the kind of photoshoot you would like to do. Do you visualise this as something relaxed at home, to remind your kids of the place they grew up in, or a beautiful location outdoors? Pick a location that’s meaningful to your family — it could be a park in the neighbourhood you want to remember the session by, or the city’s skyline.
DRESS THE PART
What do your dream family portraits look like? Are they soft and elegant? If yes, then stick with light solid shades and soft flowy fabrics such as thick creams, very soft pastels, oatmeal, light shades of nude. Have your clothing chosen way in advance and make sure your outfit choices are comfortable and attractive. Remember to dress for the weather. You don’t want your kids upset in stuffy clothes during humidity. Another attire option is to get all fun and spunky.
Choosing bold accent colours such as maroon and green, greys and yellows or colours that complement each other will bring out a totally different vibe from your shoot. Colours matter, so if in doubt, run this past your photographer.
Another tip would be to wear some timeless accessories too. Mommies, get your hair and make up done. Taking the effort gives you the confidence and it really pays off in those images.
PICK A TIME
As David Ives said, ‘it’s all about the timing’. The best time to start your shoot is during your babies’ routine playtime, after they’re well-fed and rested and not during their nap time. Keeping in mind from a photography perspective, the best light is during sunset or an hour after sunrise, for outdoor shoots, so plan ahead with their schedules. If this doesn’t coincide with their timings, talk with your photographer. Essentially, a good photographer will be able to shoot at any time of the day.
DON'T BE LATE!
Be at your shoot location on time. With kids in tow, there’s always a chance you can be late. So plan ahead and be there on time to make the most of the session. Being late and rushed will definitely show in your portraits.
'CHEESE AND CRACKERS'
This one's important — your photographer needs to gel with your family too. A good photographer will know how to interact with your kids and you, to bring out those gorgeous, natural smiles. Avoid staging too many shots with fake smiles, which look strained.
The idea is to bring out your true personalities on these images! Plan an activity to enjoy together as a family so there’s less stress about posing as well.
Dont forget to be comfortable. Keep your book of tricks handy on what your kids will enjoy, to elicit the right reactions.
Smother your kids with hugs, kisses and lots of love! After all, these will be memories for life.
